Everyday when I look out at the vastness between my house and my car in the garage (OK it's really not vast but it sounded good), and think of how to manage walking through the mucky muck that is winter here, I search through my warm and comfy flat boot options. I live in an older style home, so if my garage were attached to my house, would I have a diferent perspective? Would I try to put on some cute heels, only to find that when I got to my destination I would have to walk through the sludge of a parking lot to get to the door? This is the life you lead living in a city that has real winter months. Even when I lived in NYC without a car (and house),I had to decide what to wear on my feet to walk to the subway that would keep me warm and dry. And so these kinds of warm things become ESSENTIALS here, in my climate!
So I actually get excited over cute flat boot(or slight heel) options, like Uggs and riding boots and Frye boots. All the boots below are $150 or less from Piperlime .

I have the big old bulky, snow blowing boots, but it seems like, over the last couple of years, I've been having to make more little runs in and out of the house on errands or to basketball practices and games, and I need something warm and durable for that. I need to take a look at these options!
Whenever I see someone in Alabama wearing these boots I just giggle.
Seriously? :)
Thank you for addressing the needs of people who have to live in the tundra :)
Those black zippered numbers are fab.
When I'm feeling too lazy to change shoes for the house-to-garage trek, I tie plastic grocery bags over my feet. And pray no one is looking.
I adore the first ones with the tie. But I live in florida and have no need!
i really like the ugg knit boots until i try them on myself.
These boots are adorable! I love the side-tie one (first photo).
This is really helpful to me. I'm probably going to be visiting my grandma in Canada one of these days (she's not doing too well), and since I've never really lived anywhere with snow, I have no idea what to take. But reading this makes things a lot easier in terms of what to pack!
I do have one question, though: does snow affect suede in any way? I have this pair of shearling-lined boots I want to take to Canada if I end up going there when it's snowing, but they're suede.
Achnibride, you are supposed to spray your boots to waterprooof all your leather and suede b/f going in snow (sometimes I forget though-the only real thing that happens is the toes get wet and sometimes you feel it on your socks-and then it could leave a water mark on your boots, which usually washes off-but why take the chance?)-you can buy the inexpensive waterproofing spray at any store (drug store, Target etc.).
I really want some flat leather boots but i'm having trouble finding affordable ones that fit my calves. I do have brown high boots that have a wedge but they are a very high wedge. I like these options!
I love the black zippered boots. I keep seeing that style everywhere!
I love Sal's little trick. I suspect everyone does that.
Thanks for the waterproofing advice! It started raining here finally, so I'll need to get some of that waterproofing spray for here too.
There seem to be cute flat boots at Target for low prices, as well.
