So readers, I throw the question out to you: Would you use your gift card towards a big item on your wish list, or a couple cheaper on trend items for the season?
Here are some big Nordstrom items on my radar(oh and by the way, a couple of months ago, I posted about a Nordie's wrap sweater on my wish list, but that wish has been fulfilled):
A cashmere sweater or cardigan:
A new coat:
A new handbag:
or some flat riding boots:

I would say, use the gift card towards a big item that doesn't go out of style. Trendy pieces can be fun, but they're so temporary.
I love those boots! I got a pair for this winter and they were my favorite fashion investment this winter I would say.
I'd go for something that's durable and you'll have for awhile. However, bear in mind that the bulk of the gift cards I get are for places like Target, and could explain why I've been carrying around some I've had for more than a year! I can't find "the perfect thing"!

In the past, I would've done lots of little cheapie things ... but I'm with swk on this one. Go big. Use that card for something expensive and well-made that you couldn't otherwise afford.
Hmm. Interesting...I always manage to end up having a balance DUE when I use gift cards... My recommendation would be to go for the handbag, boots or coat...but knowing me, I would end up buying all three. oh. Maybe that would explain why I end up having a balance due?
I heart gift cards! Being a teacher I usually get at least one from our students' parents every year. I got one for Macy's this Christmas which I used on a beautiful DKNY blouse that was on sale but still too expensive for me. Loooove!
The key to gift cards I think is the store. If it's a high-end store like Nordstrom you might want to put it towards a more expensive item you've wanted but couldn't afford. If it's a lower-priced store like Target, WalMart, etc., then you can spend it pretty much on anything you like.
It's midrange shops like Macy's where it's hard to decide what to get, because you can get all sorts of things at different prices.
One last thing about the Nordstrom card -- you can also use it at Nordstrom Rack!
To help out my budget, I'd definitely get something big that I'd otherwise have to save for. Have fun shopping!

the flat boots! so classic and i love the black ones. i'd go for shoes or a purse myself. or makeup... loves nordies makeup counters!

Well...depends on what trendy items you want...If it's something like a fur vest or a colorful scarf then I'd say go for it, becuase although those items are trendy they are also timeless...
Overall though, I think you should go for that one classic item that you've been longing for:)
