Beauty: Top Ten Classics

According to Glamour magazine (photo source: Glamour.com), the following are the top ten best selling beauty items:

-Revlon Nail Enamel Nail Polish
-Dove Beauty Bar Soap
-Neutrogena Rainbath Shower & Bath Gel
-Oil of Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Moisturizer
-Cover Girl Clean Liquid Makeup Foundation
-Lancome Juicy Tubes Smoothie Ultra Shiny Lipgloss
-Pantene Pro-V Classic Care Hair Conditioner
-Clairol Nice 'n Easy Hair Color
-Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara
-Guerlain Terracotta Moisturizing Long Lasting Bronzing Powder

And NOT ONE THING on that list is used by me!

My list is more like this: Lever 2000 soap,OPI Nail Polish, Aveeno Moisturizer, John Frieda Shampoo and Conditioner, Oil of Olay (and Ulta and Philosophy)Body Wash, Buxom lips Lip Gloss (or any tinted lip balm), Loreal Voluminous Mascara, Laura Gellar bronzer, Bare Minerals foundation, and hair color- straight from the salon!

So it got me thinking: Who the heck buys and uses the stuff on the best-sellers list? (I mean they are best-sellers for a reason, no?)

And are they good enough to make me want to try them or even switch products?

Mmm, not me either!

Um...I tend to use store brand products that are apparently comparable to whatever real product I'd buy. I have used Clairol Nice & Easy, and then watched it fade out in record time, and I love the soft scent of Neutrogena after-bath body oil, but when I get a bottle of it, I tend to covet it so it lasts forever!

Lately, my list is:
Treseme shampoo and conditioner, mousse and hair spray

Ulta 3-in-1 body mousse wash (or something like that...I learned of it on your site and loaded up on it during a sale!)

Whatever lotion I have on hand for after showering

Target's version of Cetaphil

Aveeno daily use moisturizer.

For the most part, I am not brand loyal. I'm sale driven. I also have never understood why Maybelline New York Great Lash mascara is supposedly so great, because either I'm doing something wrong or I'm a lone wolf!

If that Maybelline mascara is the one in the pink/green tube, then yes, I use that one. I've tried many mascaras over the years (and I NEVER go without mascara) and I always come back to that one.

Besides that, I don't use any of those products. I like Pantene, but I've been told repeatedly that it's actually bad for your hair.

I like Dove body products, but I usually use the wash, rather than the bar.

I am so surprised to see the CG liquid make-up up there. I just think there are so many other lighter kinds of products out there- do people still use goopy think foundations?

I do. I use CG for my mascara, concealer and foudation. My mom uses it to. I like it.

I've used Pantene products, & Maybelline mascara on and off for the longest....and just recently have i started buying Revlon nail polish..just because they have a few new colors which are scented LOL...but i usually buy OPI and Essie

My mother and I have both used Great Lash in the past, and neither of us get what the big deal is with it. It doesn't seem to do anything special.

I've also used Neutrogena Rainbath years ago and liked it, but that too is not the big deal it's made out to be. I now use handmade natural soap for bathing because I have sensitive skin.

A couple of products I *can* rave over and use daily or often are:

-Aveeno body lotion (the BEST if you have dry, sensitive skin)

-Cetaphil moisturizer (wonderful face cream for dry/sensitive skin; not as heavy/greasy as Eucerin)

-Clinique Extra Mild facial soap (my mother's used the normal skin version of this for over 20 years!)

-Bobbi Brown lip sheer (gorgeous light color that's really natural-looking; I wore this for my wedding and the photos turned out fabulous, so now I use it regularly)

-Nars blush (in the super-popular Orgasm shade) is the *only* blush that's ever looked good on me and not like I've broken out in a rash.

I personally think a great majority of this top ten list is well to put it bluntly...CRAP! And if they are actually best sellers they shouldn't be.

FIRSTLY, according to several awesome hairdressers at an a highend salon Pantene Pro-V is the WORST kind of shampoo/conditioner to put into your hair! Its filled with waxes that just coat the hair and trust me hairdressers can tell when your using this because they called me out on it without me even telling them! Apparently, they can see the wax flying off your hair when they cut it! GROSS!

The only thing I can really agree with is the Lancome Juicy Tube :)

Personally, I am a chronic OPI nail polish user. And I love Pureology hair products!

I don't own a one! I love to mix it up with products and always try new things, but some items are irreplaceable: Shu Uemura eyelash curler, Stila Convertible cream blush in Lillium and Clinque's Teddy Bear Quad for eyes. I also love Aveenos foaming face wash.

Hey Christina,
This is a really great top ten list, I forwarded it to my wife and she raved about it. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and then link back to your site. We are looking for top ten lists and our users can track back to your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

I don't own any one of those products. I used to use CG foundation but as someone above said it is really goopy and thick. I switched to Bare Escentuals when I was pregnant and have used BE products ever since (almost 4 years now). My mom used to use Neutrogena Rainbath all the time. I also recently switched to using Aubrey Organics Shampoos and Conditioners and I'm totally in love.

I don't use any of those items either!

Stopping by from SITS to say hello!

Lets see I will use dove when my skin is really dry I personally have a hard time with liquid soaps and I recently made some handmade soap we have been using. I don't think I have bought anything CG since I was a teen. I have a horrible time with lipgloss it feels goopie and I hate when my hair gets caught in it I use this long lasting lip color by Revlon that stays on all day it has color on one end & gloss on the other (I never use the gloss) I love the color in Fawn. I use some form of Clairol gray-busters in a dark brown, I have to touch up my really gray hair quite often I don't have problem with fading it grows quickly and going to the salon is too expensive. I am a Loreal Voluminous mascara loyal gal too... have tried a few others but nothing compares. I use Lorac bronzer it lasts forever I used to use Guerlain. I just recently started using Bare minerals. I use a look alike brand of Neutrogena makeup wipes in blue to take my makeup off or Huggies baby wipes. I use Essie nail polish on toes it really lasts for me. I use the Pantene with pink writing it just works for me and its always on sale.

I've probably use some of those products at some point, but I like to mix things up. There are plenty of effective cheap products on the shelves these days. Right now I'm in a all-natural ingredient phase for stuff like face wash, shampoo, soap and face cream. I'll have to post my list on my blog, too! :)

This is something I LOVE talking about. Those lists never seem accurate to me. Sometimes it seems like items/companie end up on those lists for promotional reasons, KWIM?
You know who I trust for product advice -- Paula Begoun, the "cosmetics cop." Love her -- she'll tell you when an inexpensive product is comparable to an expensive one. LOVE that info.

My stuff -- vaseline for a million things, Cetaphil, Aveeno lotion, and baby shampoo to remove mascara.

Thanks for such an interesting post!
