I used to wear matte lipstick all through the nineties.
My lips retained the color well for some reason.
BUT, my lips were always extremely dry. And they appeared to look cracked and discolored after a couple of hours.
So when I finally changed to semi-matte and then tinted lip gloss my lips were in heaven.
So I am not sure I can EVER go back.
I understand the look for effect, but not for everyday wear, and certainly not RED, at least not on me. A softer browny pink works well for my coloring.
What about you?

I remember putting lipstick on and then patting them with powder for the full effect.

I could never get it to work for me. Plus, I'm so addicted to lipgloss it gave me the shakes to even try!
Tinted lip balm all the way. I could never go matte!

i have thin lips so i feel matte or dark lipstick doesnt work for me. lip gloss on the other hand creates the illusion of a fuller lip (i think!) plus i can eat an apple without getting lipstick all over the apple and my face. haha
I like the look of mat lips, but also find that on myself it looks better in hues other than red (generally). For the past year or two I've been madly in love with lip stains, which generally deliver a mat-ish colour (that last for hours!) that's less intense (usually) than that of lipstick. My favourite lip look lately has been lining my lips (with red lip pencil), applying red lip stain, and toping that off with clear or red (non-sparkly) lip gloss.

I love matte red lipstick, its a lot more casual to wear on a nice casual day than having shiny red lip gloss. I do not think I can wear it all the time, but the day I want to wake up and feel bold I would totally do it!

What browny-pink do you wear? I want something that sounds about like that but everything I try is either too pink (bright) or too orangey. I try to find the "nude" shades, but they all just come off more on the orange side for me. I'm on a quest for the PERFECT browny-pink!
sturgmom, I use the Mac color called Twig-its the perfect color for me. let me know if you try it!
Totally agree with the whole dry/cracking issue. Its hard to pull of matte lipstick. BUT I do love the look. You lips pretty much have to be perfect. I would rub an exfoliator over your lips before applying to get some of the dead skin off. The chap stick then the matte lip stick.
