Spring 2009:Maxi Dresses

(photo image: Style Bakery)

They are all the rage, so there are tons of maxi dresses to choose from this season.

If you like them, and you feel they flatter your body shape, that's a good thing!

But I have heard more than once, that although some will drape nicely over your curves, they can look voluminous on you if you are short/petite or have a short lower torso. Lots of flowy fabric can look overwhelming.

So choose wisely, or just pass!

I like the ease of wearing them, much like you would a sundress. I also think they look best with flat sandals and minimal accesories ,like Angelina, below.

The maxi dresses below are from Old Navy, KMart, Delia's and Newport News!

Do you think Maxi dresses can be worn by petite shapes?

Lesa, I think yes, if done tastefully and minimally!

Jane, I would try lighter/less fabric and see how it looks (like the Old Navy one on the far left)

Boden is hawking a maxi dress that looks so sleek and elegant ... but I fear looking like a legless wonder!

I might have to hunt something like this down and see how they look on. I sometimes feel like I have no waist, and wonder if these wouldn't make me feel like I was wearing a nightgown. I'd love the ease and comfort they look like they have, though.

(and so off topic, but seriously, ever darn picture I see of the Jolie-Pitt kids, they are toting bags of Cheetos with them!)

Yes Maxi's can be worn by a petite person :) It's the same if you worn a prom gown or any other formal attire. I have several gowns from cruises. My dilema is finding one that is casual to wear around town. Tank style so I can wear a bra with it and make sure it gets hemmed to my ankles and not drag on the ground. But it's fun searching right now :)

Hey Christina Lee - since it's been raining for 4 days now I finally bought those rain boots from your post on April 16th ;) LOL!

As a short girl, I have to say that I think that we can pull off maxi dresses. We just have to choose the right cut and wear non-flat shoes. Some dresses are cut less billowy. Those are the best.

im not sure why petites think they can't wear floor length dresses?? i think they look great a shorter than average women but that's just me!

I don't dislike them, but I think they're a bit too dramatic for the ordinary things we do in the summer. Pool, playground, library, etc. don't really fit the formality of the maxi dress, in my opinion.

I like maxi dresses a lot. But, they really don't make me look good at all. I'm curvy BUT petite so it does overwhelm my body. Sadly. I really like them. =/

I'm 5"1 and curvy and just found one at Stein Mart! It has a v-neck and wide elastic "gathered" sleeves and elastic under the bust, so it doesn't make me look bigger than I am...so keep looking.

I'm short and stumpy...I think that would look like a moo-moo on me...where's my hair curlers??

Im so glad they are still popular this season, I felt like they would die out from last summer even though i LOVED them
def a big must to get more!

i think for petite shapes, an overall solid color would be best, patterns especially overwhelming ones might bring too much attention and give the person an even shorter appearance.

I own one colorful Indian-print maxi dress I got for $10 at Ross, and although I have a feeling it's not the best look for me (I'm 5'4", quite busty and broad-shouldered, and have a short torso), I just adore that dress. I wear a tank top underneath to hide the big 'ol bra, of course, and it's fitted at the bodice with a somewhat flowy skirt (not too voluminous). I just love the way it makes me feel, for some reason.
