Unfortunately I have an apple shaped figure. I am usually a size 10 in my waist, but I could wear 8 or 6 for my legs :(... I was wondering if an apple shaped person can wear a wide legged jeans- are these past season?) ... any suggestions for how to dress my complicated body?
Thanks, Emely
Answer: Emely, I decided to expand your very good question to include all body shapes. Yes I think you should wear wide leg pants (and boot cut) which will help proportion your top and bottom (as apples tend to have thinner lower torsos)- just work on defining that waist!
Here are the typical body shapes below (photo credit from Angie over at You Look Fab, who also does this topic alot of justice-you should give her site a look as well).

SO:
If you're a PEAR, your top is smaller than your bottom. so you'll want to balance that out with A-line skirts and dresses as well as boot and wide cut panats with minimal pocket details.
If you're HOURGLASS your top and bottom match prety well and your waist is defined. But you still may have issues not looking too busty or voluptous. You should lenthen your body when you can with tone on tone bottoms and shoes.
If you're a RECTANGLE, you'r pretty even top and bottom but lack the curviness you may be craving. So you need to accentuate the bust or behind.
If you're an APPLE, like Emely, you carry alot in the middle and your legs may look slightly thinner. So you'll want to define a waist or wear empire, layers or banded tops to help cover that area (or wear wider legged bottoms).
If you're an INVERTED TRIANGLE, your top is bigger than your bottom. You'll want to tone it down on top (minimizer tops or bras) and try to balance your lower area (wide leg pants).
Susannah and Trinny have 12 women's body types, which helps define even further! I think I may be a skittle!
Here's are some other great tips on how to dress apple shapes, Emely! Hope all of this helps!
Readers, what shape are you? Any help/ideas?

I'm an apple, skittle or pear. It's all in the lower part of my body.
I hadn't seen that T&S article ... fascinating!
Hi SITSTA! **hugs
well I have been on the T and S site trying hard to figure out what I am- that was a really good resource!!!
Hmmm, I have broad shoulders,no waist, and thunder thighs. My rear isn't so bad, though. Thanks for the link!!
I'm a "goblet" according to T&S. I'm top-heavy and way too busty. If you carry weight on top the best thing, I think, is to focus on your bottom half and legs. Flared, A-line, full, ruffled and dirndl skirts all look good, esp. in pale or bright colors and/or prints. For pants, I'd go with flared and wide-leg shapes, although with wide-leg pants the tops should be fitted (otherwise you'll get a shapeless sack effect); if you have good legs you can work the straight jeans too, but stay away from skintight skinny jeans (even if you have the legs for it), unless you wear them in the winter with boots. All in all, if your lower half is shapely try and focus attention on that!
Oh, and one last thing: killer shoes are a must! If you're top heavy, they're an investment not a frivolity. Nothing draws the eye away from trouble spots like fab footwear!
wow they have A LOT of body types I haven't even known! after extensive research I believe i am a vase! I would love to see if they have more clothing recommendations for that body type
great post!
I'm an hourglass. I love my figure, but have to watch it or else I either bust out at the top or look way too hippy! Plus, all my weight goes straight to my hips so I have to work hard so I don't become a pear!
Just Awesome! Stopping by from SITS!
