Johm Frieda's Luminous Color Glaze (comes in red and blond too). It's a gel creme that you shampoo into your hair. It gives you a hint of color to help your color hold.
I have used this as well as another brand called Artec (sold at salons). Both work the same but the John Frieda is cheaper, a little over $8.
I like it BUT, it's so messy in the shower. It stains the sides of the shower and your hands. You just have to make sure to wash your hands right away after rinsing your hair.

Joan River's Great Hair Day Fill-In Powder in six different shades. I saw her presentation of this on QVC. It is for thinnning hair and for grey coverage in-between appointments. You would use it on your scalp line, much like you would use an eyebrow powder.
Looks interesting, and I might give it a try. It's $26.67 and it probaby would last a long time.

Clairol's Nice 'n Easy Root Touch Up is supposed to be a ten minute job. You style your hair the way you normally wear it and then apply the brush applicator to your part and temples, or wherever you need it. They offer several different shades and it costs around $7. Another one on my list to try. It is probably less messy than the shampoo.
Readers, what do you do between appointments?

I have naturally dark brown hair, and haven't gotten highlights in years (too poor). However, when the times comes to cover the greys, I imagine I'll get blonde highlights all the way!
I have a brown lipstick (meant for hair not lips) that I paint on my part in between times! Reminds me - must get it out I'm starting to look like a skunk!
I have a naturally odd brown shade of hair that I've been coloring a shade of auburn/red for quite some time, and I love it. Sadly, I've let it go far too long between colorings this time, so the only help for me at this point is scrounging up the money and heading to the beauty school, where, thankfully, I got a great color job on the cheap last time. It was the first time I had gone for a "real" color job. My hair...I'm clumsy and such, so trying to apply at-home color (Clairol Nice & Easy brand) on my longer hair was stressing me out, trying to get adequate, all-around color.
Anyway, long story short, I've considered the Clariol root touch up kit, but have never jumped in because I was always a bit afraid the color wouldn't quite match. Maybe I'll give it a go after I finally get my hair colored again!
I always had bleached blond hair (yes i know not good for my hair at all) but my natural hair color is brown, recently (to save money)I just dyed my hair back to the closest color to my natural hair and just let it grow
but I should try that glaze! I heard it works great

yeah i stick to blond because you can go months between coloring. can't really get away with that if you dye your hair red/black/dark brown, etc!
I am due for a dye job. I usually do it at home. The winter months I go a shade darker, which is closer to my true color. The summer months I go 2 shades lighter, cause is usually lightens from the sun anyway. So in between I'm real close to my natural color and I'm lucky I don't have alot of greys yet......
Well, right now I get blond highlights. Even though I still usually wait too long between colorings and my grays start to show, I'm too afraid I will mess up my highlights to use anything on them...
i don't have to dye my hair yet but great tips.
I sulk. And pout. And whine.
I haven't been brave enough to color my hair yet, but I know I'll start when I turn grey!
I'm a little grew at the temples....very depressing when you're just 30!
So, I got some blond highlights. I do it in April, so by the time it starts to grow out, I'm getting natural ones from the sun.
In the winter I use a wash out dye close to my natural color.
Something to look into...my hairdresser sold me on a color gloss by Schwarzkopf. It's a conditioning color mousse. It was only about $10 and she said it'll last all summer. I use it every 3 weeks or so (just like a normal conditioner) to soften the hightlights and re-condition my hair. I wonder if you could use it even w/o highlights...and if it would cover grey.
