They are a classic and in fact they're the most requested stone on my jewlery site to hang on a gold or silver personalized tag.
I offer several different colors of freshwater pearl but the one most chosen is the simple and classic cream one. The next most requested is the modern looking black pearl (which really looks like an irridescent grey).
I must admit I wear the cream one the most too, when I wear my own jewlery(like below)- it goes with everything and just feels feminine and .....simple.
Freshwater pearls are the way to go, budget-wise (but hey, if you can afford the real deal, go for it!). They are still pearls, just grown and cultured in freshwater.

Pearls are the one piece of jewelry that I consider to be truly a woman's item. (I won't say all the time, cause there is an occasionaly male wearing a piece LOL) But I view it as truly feminine ;)

i love pearls too, i have a classic white strand for special occasions and a tags-n-stone necklace with a black pearl for everyday, casual dressing :) the black pearls feel especially modern and chic. i'm loving the yellow pearls in those earrings you've shown here too...very unique!

Oh my, do I adore pearls! Angie over at YLF turned me onto shell pearls, which have nice weight and great sheen ... and are FAR cheaper than the real deal.
LOVE pearls. I got a string of cultured pearls for my 21st birthday and I still wear them all the time.
And our MC in the YA we have on sub wears her Grandmother's fake pearls when she goes into Nancy Drew mode.
