Well, I'm going on again tomorrow, and this time I am discussing tips for holding a garage sale (aka, yard sale).

Here's what I have so far:
*Put an ad on craigslist or in you local paper announcing the times and address
*Put up signs pointing to the sale on street corners (and hopefully a main street with traffic)
*Bring attention to your house during the sale with a big sign in the driveway or balloons
* Be ready! Customers will try to come early
*Make sure to have plenty of change (dollars and coins)
*Have plastic grocery bags available for purchases- it may help them buy more :)*Make sure to put prices on everything so they know what the starting point is for bargaining
*Group items together in a neat and orderly way and make the "displays " look as attractive as possible
*Make sure you have someone there if you have to walk away ( to avoid theft)
*Don't be too stringy with your prices! You want to sell as much as you can, right? Remember, you'll have to store what you don't sell, again
* Consider donating what you didn't sell to charity
So here's the part where I'd like your input, readers- did I miss anything major?

Awesome pointers...do you have any tips for us garage-sale goers? SITS sent me over...Happy Monday!
I think having things up off the ground goes a long way, and organized by use. I usually like to have coffee or a cooler of water if it's hot. It makes them linger and browse as they enjoy their drink. That's all I can think of now.
Display things off the ground FOR SURE. I know we don't all have access to tables, but FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS.
I like a table or large box of items that are "All 25 Cents E@" or $1, or whatever. It draws me in.
Also, this is a great opportunity for kids to have a lemonade stand, coffee, baked goods, etc.
Great tips - good luck tomorrow! I'd add - don't put too much stuff out there - I hate sales where's there's stuff piled on top of each other!
This sounds great to me. I agree with Christy -- in fact I think it's important to have everything organized well. If someone has a bunch of clothes, for instance, and everything's mixed in together, I'm much less likely to go through it than if it's arranged by size, with men's clothes in one area, women's clothes in another, and kids' clothes in another.
How exciting! Being from Northeast Ohio, I have watched that many times!! I will have to make sure to catch you tomorrow!
Great tips..and good luck!!!
I always love it when I go to sales and the children are selling lemonade. It's so cute. A friendly hello to new visitors is always a good idea. I find it weird when the people putting on the sale don't even acknowledge you! Can't wait to watch the show!
Oh, you guys are great- thanks for all the tips!
All very great tips, and I very much actually want to have a garage sale, but my first step would involve getting my husband to understand that he very much needs to clean out the garage!
Hoorah! Setting our TiVo. We know a real life celeb. This is too fun!
Those are great tips!
I think these are some great tips for hosting a garage sale. Another one I would add - consider renting or borrowing a canopy that can provide shade and rain cover to your items. Also, offering little freebies like small bottles of water might encourage people to buy more.
Great tips! But I live in an apartment so I won't be able to utilize them for a while.. That's too bad because we already have a lot of junk that we need to get rid of!
