An Open Letter to: My Child's Favorite Cartoon Characters

This is a take on Kat's writing prompt this week, from Mama's Losing' It.

Dear Spongebob Square Pants: Despite being over the age of ten, I admit to laughing uncontrollably at some of your antics and stupid potty humor. And sometimes, I'm the only one cracking up in the room.

Dear Max and Ruby (or Ruby and Max, which is it?):

Where are your parents? Or any other flippin' adults for that matter? Yeah, I know there are no parents in Charlie Brown either, but the Peanuts gang just don't annoy me as much as you do. Call it nostalgia or whatever you like. Just go get a damn parent before I put you over my knee myself!

Dear Bakugans:

First, what the heck are you? Second, what kind of horrible directions do you have that make it so flippin' hard to figure out the whole Bakugan game thing my son is trying to play? So you throw the card down and say "ability card activate" or some stupid stuff, and then what?

And why'd you have to go and get McDonald's and their Happy Meals involved? And then create books with tiny boring writing that drones on and on about your stupid New Vestroia planet? HUH?

Dear Scooby Doo and the Gang:

I love that you live on and are adored by so many different generations. Except that my son goes around saying things like, "yeah, man" and "groovy". Plus, he knows way too much about vampires, zombies and werewolves now. Pretty soon he'll be reading paranormal romance novels with me. Not sooo bad, I guess. If only he could walk to the bathroom by himself, without needing me to check behind the shower curtain for demons. He's worse than me!

Dear Tom and Jerry:
You were my favorite cartoon growing up. Who knew you were so violent? You're right up there with Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote!

My kids (and their father) love watching Tom and Jerry cartoons! They even act like Tom and Jerry! Just the kids I mean. I loved the way you worked so many cartoon characters into that post. Great work!

I loooove the old Tom and Jerry. Do you know they made new episodes and movies on Cartoon Network. They're ultra lame.

Also, Max & Ruby. Really? Where are their parents? And why is Ruby such a killjoy? She's got an 80 year old soul for a school aged bunny.

Stopping by from SITS, btw. :) Have a great Thursday.

I've got "tween" girls--and all of that Disney crap that comes on after school makes me want to scream. I mean . . . could the girls on those shows BE any sillier? And, someone show a smart girl who doesn't have glasses. Puh-leeze. I mean, I love glasses--mine and everybody else's, but couldn't we just buck the stereotype??? Just once?

As I write this comment, my 8 year old is watching Bakugan and messing with all the game pieces. I have no idea what any of this show/game means. I simply don't get it. Things were easier in the olden days when my 12 year old was WAY into Scooby Do! We have so many DVDs and VHS tapes and toys and stuffed animals STILL around here. Clearly I need to have a garage sale...so I can get money to buy a Bakugan game guide to understand what my kid is talking about!

Thanks for a good laugh! I love to watch Spongebob with my kids too! I think it's a crack up! But the whole Max and Ruby thing??? Why do kids like them so much? I've been wondering where their mom and dad are as well. If they were around maybe Ruby would be told to stop whining, "Maaax!" all the time. That annoys the bejeesus out of me!

you made me laugh this morning! thanks.

I SO agree with you on Max & Ruby. I can't stand that cartoon, but Monkey loves it. Ugh! As far as Spongebob goes, it has been banned in this house. I know I am going to be a killjoy on this one, but I don't need my two yearold walking around talking about adult humor. I do miss some of our old cartoons though and yes, they were violent, but not many of us actually went out and tried the things that they did! I mean, it's a cartoon for pete's sake!

Wow, what great comments. You made me laugh.

Oh how funny! I remember watching Grease & Little Shop of Horrors (2 of my favorite movies as a kid) and thinking: this is totally inappropriate for a kid! What the heck were my parents thinking!! :)

I love Spongebob too. And you know what? Wizards of Waverly Place is the funniest show around. Disney channel, baby. :)

I love that you addressed all of the questions I'd have of these cartoons. Especially there "where are your parents" for Max and Ruby. :)

My sister watched Scooby Doo every morning at breakfast for years...then she switched to Rocko's Modern Life. Did you ever see Rocko? I loved it!

Spongebob really cracks me up too! And I'm so over the Japanese cartoon/card game thing!!

Ahhh, the cartoon characters. Today my son learned a lovely phrase from Avatar (the animated one on Nick Toons): "Leave it to a girl to screw things up"! Awesome. He was kind enough to repeat it at gymnastics also. At least the old cartoons were less blatant in their inappropriateness!

Tom & Jerry were my absolute favorite cartoon! And Scooby Doo...well what can I say??? Loved it. I have always wondered where Max and ruby's parents are too...once in a while the grandma shows up, but that is it. Haha. Loved this.

haha, that's funny. So true about tom and Jerry. They are so violent, but fun :) oh, and max, and ruby, that's funny, yeah, where are the parents?

Laughing so hard about Max and Ruby! My heart breaks a little bit every time Ruby has to hit the department store with $5 to buy him a new pair of overalls. I mean, shouldn't grandma have full custody?

Hilarious! I'm with you on the Bakugans. They have toys and stuff I can't even begin to understand.

Max & Ruby - ha ha! I am waiting for my daughter to ask where their parents are. Grandma really needs to take custody of them instead of living just over the bridge.
