made you look
made you look
now you're in the baby book
It made me smile. And I thought, My how times have changed, yet still remain the same.
His version was definitely more PC. We used to say:
Made you look,
You dirty crook,
Stole your mother's pocket book.

The next day we were about to play a game and were deciding who goes first. So he began:
Eeny meeny miney mo
catch a tiger by the toe
if he hollers let him go eeny meeny miney mo
my mother told your mother to pick the very best one
red, white, and blue
And I pick YOU.
Of course, he drew out the syllables so the last one landed on him. Ha!
It got me thinking, of course, about what we used to say. Again, less PC. It was:
Eeny meeny miney mo
catch a monkey by the toe
if he hollers let him go eeny meeny miney mo
my mother told your mother to pick the very best one
So out you go,
You dirty old dishrag YOU!
I'm sure I can go on and on with the similarities and the differences!
And don't even get me staring on all the jump rope versions ( Joey and Molly sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G...).
What do YOU remember?

I'm not sure what it was in North America at the time, but the first one when I grew up in England was:
Made you look
Made you stare
Made you lose your underwear.
I'm not going to repeat the second one because it was politically incorrect and slammed African Americans (Black Canadians, etc). I'm not sure if the word was a bad word back then, but I'm guessing it might have been. There were no kids of different racial backgrounds in the English town I grew up in for us to know better. We were all white and boring.
I love how some things never change, but I'm glad it's more PC now ;o) With the enny menny one, we added at the end....dot,dot,dot, dot....dot. dot. Lol!
Nobody ever remembers this one but me:
Baby, Baby
Stick your head in gravy
Wash it out with bubble gum
And send it to the Navy!
My daughter says the new "made you look" too!
I love how the old sayings have a new twist! Old, but new!
The K-I-S-S-I-N-G song still remains the same here though!
I love this one:
See you,
Don't want to be you.
Have a great week.
Mary
That's so sweet! Well, I have to admit, these more modern versions are quite well behaved if compared to the old ones!
But all that I know is in portuguese!
Stina nailed the one I was going to write!!! I loved these... too much fun!!!
I remember all those 'Suzie had a tugboat' things we used to do with the hand gestures. Oh to be kids again!
Hah, good points. All I can think of right now is: Johnny and Mary sitting in a tree, ect...
I wonder how that one sounds now-a-days?
We said "tiger" but the end was, "My mother said to pick the very best one and YOU are NOT it."
I had forgotten about stole your mother's pocket book!
I remember playing Bloody Mary and Light as a Feather.
And let's not forget the countless hand games...you know...Three Sailors, Ci Ci oh playmate. Etc. I am sure more will come to me as the day wears on. LOL
I said the "made you look" one the same as Stina, and did "eeny, meeny" like Lourie. My favorite jump rope rhyme was "Cinderella, dressed in yellow, went upstairs to kiss her fellow. Made a mistake. Kissed a snake. How many doctors did it take?"
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
We did "tiger" too. But we said,
Eeny meeny miny moe
Catch a tiger by the toe
If he hollers let him go
Eeny eeny miny moe
Weird, I know.
Oh I do remember... funny how some things never change.
Made you look, you dirty crook, you stoled your Mothers pocketbook.....
Great post
My boys have been asking me lately if I remember the hand slap chants, and suddenly, they just escaped my brain! I do know they don't like it when I change up the words to 'cracker jack, cracker jack, in a dish, how many kisses do you wish?'
They've also wanted to know if I know how to make cootie catchers, which I LOVE, but can't make. Perhaps my lack of memory is saving me from having them tell me I smell when they open up one of the flaps on one they've created!
We were eeny-meeny miny moe, but very PIc... the hand games was
"My mother sent me to the store,
To get a loaf of bread;
I fell in love with the bagboy there.
And, he gave me this instead....
He gave me lots of.....
Those were the days...
Oh my gosh...hand slap chants...
Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black
With silver buttons, buttons, buttons
All down her back, back, back
That's all I can remember but the rest of the chant had something about fifty cents and an elephant.
I thought those were a thing of the past. Off hand I can't remember any.
