Dressing for Winter

If there's one thing I 've learned about living in the northeast, it's how to dress warmly.

But it took me awhile to get there.

Actually, it took living in NYC ten years ago, where I had to walk everywhere in the elements, and then getting a dog that I have to walk every single day, to convince me.

Everyday I see people dressed poorly in the snowy, twenty degree weather here. They stand shivering and complaining how F***ing cold it is.

They are usually wearing some kind of a fall trench coat, or a measly denim or leather jacket with shoes that the snow soaks right through.

And I want to shout at them-- HELLO!

Are you a transplant from Florida or California? Because if not and you've lived here your whole life or the last few years, get some winter clothes on already!

All you need are weatherproof boots, a good down or wool coat and the most important thing, besides a scarf and gloves?

A good knit or wool HAT!

It's true that heat escapes through your head. So wearing a hat makes you feel ten times warmer! I don't care if it musses up your hair, put a darn hat on already!

You will rarely see me without a hat in the winter months and I've got quite a collection going.

Here are some of my favorite styles:

Just experiment with a few styles. You'll find one that flatters you. Most of mine have come from the kids department because I just happen to have a small head! :D

I LOVE hats! I buy them for the kids, and no one wears them. They all mysteriously disappear. Unfortunately, there's really no need for them in Arizona except for like 3 days in December.

Good morning from Michigan, We are having a heat-wave....it is 25..thank you for your comment. I am trying not to let winter get the best of me. So far so good.
love your hats...looking for a small baret style...(slouch) not too big. On the small side and very soft.

Here is Mississippi we are having a weird, long cold snap (temps in the single digits are definitely not the norm here!!).

I love, love the white hat with the rose. Too cute!! I'd order it, but it'll probably be 80 degrees next week.

Very true! I just started wearing knit hats several years ago and I have no idea how I lived without one, all those years ignoring my mother haha

Lol!! You got me! I never, ever wear a hat. I never even use fur-lined hoodie on my down coat. I hated hats as a kid, and still do to this day. But at least I bundle up with solid boots, gloves and scarf :) Doesn't that count for something??

In TX, people are stupidly ill-prepared for cold (like the Acrtic temps we had here last weekend). Not kidding- no matter the temperature there WILL be a child allowed to go to school in 1) shorts 2) flip flops or 3) capris. Ridiculous!

I know the importance of a good hat, but I have the opposite problem as you- it's difficult to find a hat to fit on my HUGE MELON (it's like an orange on a toothpick!).

Hey Sturgmom I'm in south Texas and I completely get what you're saying. When I taught school it always frustrated me to see a child in a short sleeve and no jacket of any kind. Let's just say no recess those days.

Hello, my name is LMJ and I am a inappropriate cold weather dresser. I am from Florida, it is not my fault. We all need a little coaching. I live in Vegas now and I still go to work in January in a sleeveless top, but I do wear only Uggs, jeans and a ski jacket when I'm in Utah.

I'll try harder.

You are so rite about dressing for the weather and wearing hats. Leg warmers are great too! Here is a link to a post with a video I made about bundling up for sub zero weather you might enjoy:

Boy! am I with you on this one. It makes ME cold to see the german teenagers coming home from school.. -12 degrees, snow and they STILL wear tiny jackets and silly shoes. But the worst is when you see them continuing to do wear shirts to show off their bellys. Nuts! My SIL insists I look like a lunatic in my wool hat.. but as I too walk or bike everywhere, I am sticking with it.

I, too, have a small head. I can usually wear my boyz' winter hats!

I recently blogged about my new favorite winter outfit...my Uggs, skinny jeans, sweater, wool coat, cute scarf and gloves, and a hat. I love hats!

Maybe I'm not so fashionably challenged?!

lol. I was born and raised and still live in Massachusetts- and me and all the moms stand at the bus top in sweat shirts complaining about the weather- don't worry our kids are all dressed warmly- it's like we have to prove we are to tough to let the weather get to us or something. We don't wear coats until the wind chill brings it down below 0.

lol. Enjoying your blog. Sounds like we have a lot in common. Your career changes are about like mine, I used to be a teacher and wound up writing. I also have a five year old. :)

I'm CA Girl who lived in VA for 6 years, and I do not miss having to apply all that gear. But you are right. A good jacket, sweater underneath...etc.
