Haunting Literature Quotes

Or, hauntingly beautiful. In honor of HALLOWEEN!
"You're surprised at all the blood." from YOU, by Charles Benoit.

"Somewhere out of the darkness, a phoenix was singing in a way Harry had never heard before: a stricken lament of terrible beauty. And he felt that the music was inside him, not without; it was his own grief turned magically to song that echoed across the grounds and through the castle windows.

How long they all stood there, listening, he did not know."
from HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE by J.K. Rowling.

"Understand Death? Sure. That was when the monsters got you." from SALEM'S LOT by Stephen King.

"What power would hell have if those imprisoned here would not be able to dream of heaven?" from PRELUDES AND NOCTURNES by Neil Gaiman.

"Then he unwove himself into strips of darkness. Snakes of smoky blackness wrapped around me like a cocoon, winding tighter and darker.

He bound me tighter and his darkness swallowed my light."
from DECEPTION, by Lee Nichols.

"I couldn't see a thing. I slammed on the brakes spinning out into the darkness. The headlights flickered, for barely a second, and a pair of huge green eyes stared back at me from the middle of the road." from BEAUTIFUL CREATURES by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

"There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife. The knife had a handle of polished black bone and a blade finer and sharper than any razor...if it sliced you, you might not even know that you had been cut - not immediately.

The knife had done almost everything it was brought to the house to do and both the blade and the handle were wet... "
from THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, by Neil Gaiman

Ooh I love horror stories! These are some great quotes here Christina. Thanks for sharing.

Here's another:

"I could not help feeling that they were evil things -- mountains of madness whose farther slopes looked out over some accursed ultimate abyss."

H.P. Lovecraft (At the Mountains of Madness)

That Harry Potter quote was one of the most haunting moments in the books for me, right after you know who died. Still brings tears to my eyes.
